课时作业(二十八) [选修6 Unit 3 A healthy life](限时:35分钟)阅读理解erience new environments and learn in different ways.

But holidays are expensive and,for those on low wages or living on benefits, they are often unobtainable. Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional costs that are difficult for many families to meet.,the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childcare. When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks, there is a need to spread this across the year.Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday. For some, this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult.inspiring learning environment. The number of children receiving free school meals is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start to the day. Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educational support. Schools also have an important role in safeguarding children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed.

While teachers are holidaying in the UK,many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learning.

In setting out its plans for a five-term year,Nottingham City Council(委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to four and a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, each followed by a two-week break. We believe this will give real “down time” for school staff and pupils alike but will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning.

We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, this must be weighed ________.

  课后阅读--------A noble gangster 贵族歹徒

There was a time when the owners of shops and businesses in Chicago had to pay large sums of money to gangsters in return for 'protection.' If the money was not paid promptly, the gangsters would quickly put a man out of business by destroying his shop. Obtaining 'protection money' is not a modern crime. As long ago as the fourteenth century, an Englishman, Sir John Hawkwood, made the remarkable discovery that people would rather pay large sums of money than have their life work destroyed by gangsters.

Six hundred years ago, Sir Johan Hawkwood arrived in Italy with a band of soldiers and settled near Florence. He soon made a name for himself and came to be known to the Italians as Giovanni Acuto. Whenever the Italian city-states were at war with each other, Hawkwood used to hire his soldiers to princes who were willing to pay the high price he demanded. In times of peace, when business was bad, Hawkwood and his men would march into a city-state and, after burning down a few farms, would offer to go away if protection money was paid to them. Hawkwood made large sums of money in this way. In spite of this, the Italians regarded him as a sort of hero. When he died at the age of eighty, the Florentines gave him a state funeral and had a pictured painted which was dedicated to the memory of 'the most valiant soldier and most notable leader, Signor Giovanni Haukodue.'

One-quarter of the US workforce could be doing their jobs at home if all those able to telecommute chose to do so,according to a study on Wednesday which said many still elect to work at the office.

All those people working from home could translate into annual gasoline savings of $3.9 billion, according to the National Technology Readiness Survey.

But the study also found that about 14 percent of the workforce has the option to telecommute but chooses not to.As the study’s principal researcher,Professor P.K. Kannan, put it:

That seems to suggest that even if employers were to say tomorrow that everybody had the option of telecommuting and that it would save a lot of gas, that’s not going to happen.

What’s going on?Some of it is obvious:people like to go to the office for social reasons, even if their work tasks don’t require it.And that’s not just to be around other people. Our social needs also include being seen, and making “right” impressions on bosses and colleagues. Our own research at Work Design Collaborative is completely consistent with that interpretation.

So how are we actually going to realize the energy-saving opportunities that we’re missing? It seems to me there are two very basic actions called for.

First, organizations must make distributed work not only available but expected by more employees.Company policies and financial incentives can easily “push” workers into changing their patterns.Note that I am not advocating making everyone a full-time telecommuter. But just getting half of the workforce to work from home or in a nearby facility two days a week would save 20% of the gasoline now being consumed by moving people from homes to offices.

Second,we also need some national public policy initiatives to encourage people to work from home. It’s time to realize just how critical telecommuting and distributed work are to our national security—on several levels. It’s about reducing our dependence on foreign sources of energy. It’s about business continuity in the face of natural disasters(Katrina, etc.) and/or acts of terrorism. And perhaps most importantly of all,it’s about reducing greenhouse gases as we address the global climate crisis I wrote about yesterday in An Inconvenient Truth.

16.What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.One-quarter of the US workforce is now doing their jobs at home.

B.The people who prefer to work from home can not afford to telecommute.

C.Although they can telecommute,Americans still prefer to work at office.

D.More and more people who can telecommute prefer to work from home.

17.According to the study, people don’t choose to work from home because________.

A.the working culture now is still not favorable

B.people want to meet their social needs

C.people are afraid of falling behind their colleagues

D.people can’t work well without teamwork

18.According to the passage, the main benefit for people to work from home is that________.

A.there would be less traffic jams

B.working efficiency could be greatly increased

C.the energy-saving opportunities could be realized

D.the relation between bosses and workers could be greatly improved

19.What’s the author’s attitude towards working from home?

A.He thinks it is too early to put it into practice.

B.He thinks it is ideal and not practical enough.

C.He thinks it is the company’s fault for its delay.

D.He is completely in favor of it.

20.The underlined word “incentives” in the passage has a similar meaning to________.

  A.encouragements

  B.pressures

  C.crisisD.services

I used to be the messiest person alive. Over the years, through watching others and by trial and error,I have finally found ways to come up with plans, organize them and follow through with them.

Make an outline of everything you need to have and do to make your plan happen. Make a list of all of the steps that need to be followed and think about what need to be done.

Detail everything thoroughly and read it over so you can start coming up with some ways of how to carry out your plans. You should ensure that different ways are needed at hand. Therefore,if for some reason one way doesn’t work, one of the other ones will.

Committing yourself to finishing at least part if not all of your plan at once is also necessary. If you make a promise to yourself to finish before a specific time, make sure that you carry that out,and be sure to do everything within the time frame you set for yourself.

Don’t try to deal with more things all at a time. All that does is to delay your progress, distract you and make you lose your interest, motivation and energy.

Carrying out an effective plan requires being as organized as possible. You will only achieve this by sticking to the order of the plan and not deviating or trying to do more at a time.

Last but not the least, you should never give up things mid-project. It will only annoy everyone around you including yourself.

So,don’t be afraid of organization. The older we get,the more necessary it becomes to have the skills necessary to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized and manageable way. It pays to be organized, after all.
